In the past hundred of years, the world has seen some major changes. The human life has become longer and many diseases have been eradicated. Still, there are some issues that the modern medicine still struggles with, such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Scientists all over the world have been doing their best to find the cure for those problems, but the answer might already be here.

So many times nature has proved to be the solution to our problems, we only needed to pay closer attention to it. Goji berries have been around forever, but the majority of people still have no idea what they are. People in China and East Asia have been using is as traditional medicine for many centuries, but not until the past few years have these berries became famous around the world. A few decades ago, not many people outside of Asia had any idea about health benefits of Goji berries, but today, many are calling them a superfruit.

Antioxidants

You’ve probably heard a dozens of times that doctors are advising the consumption of foods rich in antioxidants to fight all sorts of diseases. It’s a commonly known fact that antioxidants are effective in cancer treatment and prevention, but not many people know what they really are. To get a better idea about this type of molecules, imagine them as policemen who are putting bad guys, in this case, free radicals, in jail, to prevent them from doing any more harm. Free radicals are products of oxidation and can cause chain reactions, which makes them the culprit for cancer and many other diseases. So, if you get enough antioxidants in your body, free radicals will stand no chance.

Scientific studies have shown that Goji berries contain a high amount of quality antioxidants, most notably selenium and polysaccharides. With 50 micrograms of selenium per 100 grams, Goji berries are among the foods richest in this antioxidant, leaving behind beef, lamb, chicken, mushrooms and many other commonly consumed foods. Goji berries are also very rich in polysaccharides, which lower the pH values, thus stimulating the immune system and reducing the risk of colon cancer.

Fat Burning Properties

Obesity is one of the most common medical issues in the 21st century. Nations like the USA, Greece, Kuwait, Argentina and number of others, have huge problems with obesity, with over 60 percent of their population being overweight. The cause of this problem is in most cases unhealthy lifestyle. Fast food, inactivity, and stress are what leads to obesity, so fighting it is far from being easy. That’s why people are looking for new ways to increase fat burning and accelerate the metabolism. It seems again that the Goji berries could be a great ally.

Because they have low glycemic index, Goji berries will not cause food cravings like other fruits do. The Glycemic rate of Goji berries is only 29, which is way lower than that of apples, bananas, oranges, melons, etc. Apart from that, Goji berries contain a high amount of diet fiber, which is great for accelerating metabolism and detoxifying the liver and the colon. Finally, the combination of 11 essential  amino acids, vitamins, and minerals creates a perfect combination for fat burning, which will then result in increased energy levels.

Blood Sugar Levels

Controlling blood sugar can lead to major health benefits, but doing that is far from being easy. Still, there are some foods that can help you a lot. Goji berries are an awesome choice for those who would like to avoid fruits abundant in sugar. If you’re having problems with high blood sugar, instead of snacks and sweets, you choice should be Goji berries. A study from 2004 has shown that this type of berries helps not only in reducing blood sugar, but also in controlling the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

The science behind the fact that Goji berries are great for blood sugar control is that they contain a high amount of long-chain carbohydrates, called polysaccharides. A research done on polysaccharides has shown that they have a lot of healthy properties, including blood sugar reduction. In fact, one study showed that just after 10 days of increased intake of polysaccharides, the levels of sugar in the blood of the patients has dropped significantly.

Arthritis

For ages, Tibetan monks have known the cure for arthritis. They’ve learned that Goji berries are an amazing solution for curing joint inflammation. The number of Arthritis cases been increasing constantly in the last couple of decades and the disease has stopped being exclusive to elderly. Today, it equally affects people of all ages. A lot of scientific studies have been done; all showing that regular consumption of Goji berries can help reducing or even completely removing the pain caused by arthritis.

Healthy Skin

Apart from making you feel healthy and vigorous, Goji berries will even make you more beautiful. It is proven, both from the experience of those who eat them on a regular basis and scientific research as well, that Goji berries make the skin glow. The reason for that is the perfect combination of vitamins and minerals, all of which are great to make your skin healthy. Vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, selenium and some amino acids that Goji berries contain, are proved to have anti-aging properties. After just a few weeks of consuming Goji berries on a daily basis, you are guaranteed to notice improvements on your skin, such as glowing and moisturizing.

Conclusion

With so many confirmed healthy properties, Goji berries are a real superfood. Certified researchers claim that they have benefits related to fighting the battle with cancer, preventing diabetes, losing weight and even making your skin more beautiful. Apart from that, there are properties that are claimed by some people, which still need to be proved or debunked. One thing is certain, though, Goji berries are safe to use and have no known side effects. They’ve been around in Chinese medicine for centuries and they haven’t reported anything but good sides of these berries. With all this in mind, Goji berries definitely deserve a chance. Nothing is stopping you from trying them!

I haven’t tried goji berries yet. I haven’t even seen one TBH. As a fruit, I mean. Sure there are lots of goji berry juice drinks out there but those are loaded with sugar already. I need to lose weight and *sigh* that magical, glowing skin. I look older for my age! I need to find this berry ASAP!

This berry is all that I need to lose weight. Aside from weight loss, it will help fight cancer too. How awesome is that? I’ve tried several diet plans but they just don’t work for me because I always feel deprived and so I make up for it by eating more! Now this goji thing sounds promising huh…might as well give it a try.

This may be a good fruit for my husband to try for his blood sugar. He’s borderline diabetic and always wanting fruit without too much natural sugar. He has very high cholesterol and triglycerides, too, so this might be the answer for him.

I actually can’t find fresh goji berries in my local supermarket. What is more common are fruit juices out of goji berries. They are not cheap at all and when you look at the sugar content on the label, you will think twice about drinking it. The bottom line is, these super foods might have loads of health properties, but availability and accessibility are hampering consumers.

Yea! Gogi berries are finally available in the stores around here! Being in a somewhat rural (definitely NOT urban) area, so many of the superfoods have not been easy to find. This is a great and deeply informative article about the many reasons Gogi berries deserve a place at your table. Thank you!
