I’m yet to meet a person who doesn’t simply adore sinking their teeth into a brightly coloured, mouth-watering and juicy orange? The sweet citrus taste floods your taste buds and you’re left feeling refreshed, revived and ready for action.

But did you know that there’s more to this classic fruit than meets the eye. In fact, oranges could be your secret weapon this winter, and help you effortlessly beat those nasty winter bugs. Here’s why:

1.      Oranges Are Overflowing With Antioxidants

Just one average-sized orange contains a massive 72% of your daily requirement for vitamin C. This powerful vitamin helps maintain cell health throughout your body and has a potent strengthening effect on your immune system which helps to protect against seasonal illnesses and better fight them off.

One study conducted at the University of Helsinki even suggests that vitamin C could help overcome lung problems such as coughs, chest infections and even bronchitis so you can breathe easily the whole year round.

2.     Oranges Hydrate Your Body

It’s essential that we always drink enough fluids to allow our bodies to work at the best of their abilities. Never is this more important than when we are ill. During these times, our immune systems are working flat out to get rid of whatever bacteria or virus is making us so sick and get us back on our feet again. And to do this well, they need that extra fluid.

What better way to keep our hydration levels up than to eat oranges? They’re wonderfully juicy, can be popped into a bag without additional preparation and they can give you that taste of the sunshine whilst you are on the road to recovery.

The best way to enjoy them is freshly squeezed and served in a tall glass over ice, sitting in the winter sun!

3.     Oranges Help Beat Viral Infections

Many studies have shown that the polyphenols contained in oranges can play a powerful role in protecting against viral infections, and helping to overcome them. Polyphenols are plant-based antioxidant compounds which are found abundantly in all fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and even red wine, but most richly in citrus fruits and can also help regulate your blood sugar, keep your heart healthy, keep your skin looking fresh and young and also keep your brain working optimally at the same time. Perfect!

4.     Oranges Help Regulate Your Fluid Balance

When you’ve been struck by a period of illness, the balance of electrolytes in your body is likely to suffer, especially if that illness involves vomiting or diarrhoea. The good news is that oranges are rich in an electrolyte mineral called potassium which help to maintain your energy levels, regulate your heart beat and keep your muscles functioning optimally.

So forget expensive sports drinks when looking to rebalance your electrolytes- turn to oranges for a delicious and highly affordable pick-me-up instead.

5.     Oranges Are The Optimal Recovery Food

The worst thing you can do when you are suffering from a winter bug is turn to junk food for comfort. Not only will it provide your body with empty calories, you’ll lack the vital nutrients that will accelerate your recovery and help you heal from the inside.

Oranges will help you steer clear of that junk, whilst providing you with a natural recovery food which is packed full of cell-boosting antioxidant vitamins and minerals and tastes pretty good too.

If you’re looking to protect yourself from seasonal colds and flu and stay fighting fit all winter long, throw a bag or two of oranges into your shopping trolley and enjoy! Not only will you feel so much better, you’ll also glow from the inside too.
